Malignant neoplasms (cancers) and ischaemic heart disease were the leading causes of death for Tasmanians in 2004, accounting for 1,171 (30.1% of all Tasmanian deaths) and 667 (17.1% of all Tasmanian deaths) respectively.

In 2004, more male deaths were recorded than female deaths for the majority of conditions.
