SUMMARY OF FINDINGS


WHEAT GRAIN STORED

Total grain stored by bulk grain handlers and users at the end of April 2009 decreased 1.4 million tonnes to 10.6 million tonnes from March 2009.

At the end of April 2009, the amount of wheat grain stored by bulk grain handlers was 10.1 million tonnes, of which 7.8 million tonnes was graded for milling and 2.3 million tonnes was graded for feed.

Wheat grain stored by wheat grain users at the end of April 2009 decreased by 10.4% from March 2009 to 540 thousand tonnes.


WHEAT GRAIN USED

The estimate of wheat grain used in April 2009 was 2.1 million tonnes, a decrease of 13.6% from last month.

Wheat grain exports in April 2009 decreased 300 thousand tonnes, to 1.7 million tonnes. The main exporting state continued to be Western Australia (800 thousand tonnes) followed by New South Wales (400 thousand tonnes).

Domestic usage in April 2009 was 389 thousand tonnes, a decrease of 6 thousand tonnes from last month. Domestic use of wheat grain continued to be highest in New South Wales at 172 thousand tonnes.

Nationally, the total wheat grain used since the end of September 2008 was 11.3 million tonnes.


WHEAT GRAIN COMMITTED

At 30 April 2009, there were 4.2 million tonnes of wheat grain committed for domestic use within Australia or for export. This represented a decrease of 17.6% from the March estimate of 5.1 million tonnes.

Of the total wheat grain committed in Australia, 3.3 million tonnes (78.9%) were contracted for export, and 900 thousand tonnes (21.1%) were contracted for domestic use.
