KEY POINTS


Wheat grain stored by state
  • All states recorded a decrease in stocks of wheat grain stored in February 2012 . The largest decrease in stocks of wheat grain stored occurred in New South Wales where a decrease of 12% or 826 thousand tonnes from the end of January 2012 was recorded.
  • Western Australia stored the largest amount with 8.7 million tonnes which was 38% of national stocks. New South Wales was next largest with 6.1 million tonnes which accounted for 26% of national stocks.

Wheat grain stored, Australia
  • Australia's bulk storage of wheat grain in February 2012 decreased by 2.3 million tonnes (9%) to 23.3 million tonnes. This was 2.9 million tonnes (14%) higher than in February 2011.

Wheat grain stored by grade
  • As a result of a poor 2010/11 season there has been a significant reduction in the proportion of higher quality wheat grain and a corresponding increase in feed grade wheat grain stored.
  • Stocks of wheat grain for milling were 15.9 million tonnes which was 68% of all grain stored in February 2012.
  • At the end of February 2012 feed grade wheat grain stocks were 7.4 million tonnes (32% of all grain stored) which was a decrease of 629 thousand tonnes (8%) from January 2012. Compared to February 2011, feed grade wheat grain stocks were down by 1.4 million tonnes (16%) in February 2012 .
