Through the year to the March quarter 2014, the Final demand index rose 2.5%, the Intermediate demand index rose 3.3% and the Preliminary demand index rose 3.5%.

The rise of 0.9% in the Final demand index in the March quarter 2014 reflected an increase of 0.7% in the prices of domestically produced products and a increase of 2.7% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+7.9%) and other agriculture (+8.0%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (+3.5%), other transport equipment manufacturing (+4.6%) and furniture and other manufacturing (+4.8%). The depreciation of the Australian dollar against major trading currencies contributed to this rise. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+7.7%), sheep, beef cattle and grain farming; and dairy cattle farming (+5.7%) and printing and printing support services (+5.2%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for fishing (-14.7%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for oil and gas extraction (+4.0%), textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+5.6%) and electrical equipment manufacturing (+6.2%). The depreciation of the Australian dollar against major trading currencies contributed to this rise. Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for basic ferrous metal product manufacturing (-13.0%) and pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-3.4%).

The rise of 1.5% in the Preliminary demand index in the March quarter 2014 reflected an increase of 1.1% in the prices of domestically produced products and an increase of 3.3% in the prices of imported products.
