COMMENTARY


WAGE PRICE INDEXES

Australia/Sector (seasonally adjusted)

In the September quarter 2017 both the Private and the Public sector indexes rose 0.5%. The All sectors quarterly rise was also 0.5%.

Through the year, the Private sector rise to the September quarter 2017 was 1.9%, the Public sector rose 2.4%, and All sectors rose 2.0%.


Australia/Sector (original)

In the September quarter 2017, wages rose 0.8% for All sectors. Private and Public sector wages grew 0.8%.

The All sectors through the year rise was 2.0%. Through the year Private sector growth (1.9%) continues to track below Public sector growth (2.4%).


State/Territory (original)

In the September quarter 2017, Tasmania recorded the highest quarterly rise of 1.3%. The Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory recorded the lowest quarterly rise of 0.5%.

Rises through the year ranged from 1.3% for Western Australia to 2.2% for Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania. Northern Territory (1.4%) recorded the lowest through the year rise since the beginning of the series.

In the Private sector, the quarterly rise of 1.5% for Tasmania was the highest rise of all states and territories. The lowest quarterly rise of 0.6% was recorded by the Northern Territory.

Rises through the year in the Private sector ranged from 1.4% for Western Australia to 2.2% for Tasmania.

In the Public sector, New South Wales recorded the highest quarterly rise of all the states and territories (1.3%). Western Australia and the Northern Territory recorded the lowest of 0.3%.

Through the year, Queensland recorded the highest Public sector rise of 2.8%, and the Northern Territory recorded the lowest (1.3%).

In the Private sector, Accommodation and food services recorded the highest quarterly rise of 1.7%. Accommodation and food services also recorded the highest quarterly rise in September quarter 2016 (1.7%). Mining recorded the lowest growth over the quarter (0.2%). Rises through the year in the Private sector ranged from 1.2% for Mining to 2.7% for Health care and social assistance, and Arts and recreation services.

In the Public sector, Public administration and safety recorded the highest quarterly rise of 1.2%. Electricity, gas, water and waste service, Professional, scientific and technical services and Education and training recorded the lowest quarterly wages growth of 0.5%.

Rises through the year in the Public sector ranged from 1.5% for Professional, scientific and technical services to 2.8% for Health care and social assistance.
