ANALYSIS

TREND ESTIMATES

In trend terms the total number of jobs in Australia increased by 104,800 (or 0.7%), made up of 11,700 job vacancies and 93,100 filled jobs.

Filled jobs in Australia grew by 0.7% in the June quarter 2018, following a 0.6% rise in the March quarter 2018. Filled jobs grew 2.8% through the year in trend terms. The number of main jobs grew by 81,200 (an increase of 0.6%) while secondary jobs grew by 11,800 (an increase of 1.3%) in the June quarter 2018.

The total number of employed persons increased by 0.6% to 13.2 million in the June quarter 2018.

The total number of hours actually worked decreased by 0.2% to 5.3 billion hours, and the total labour income increased by 1.2% to $243,622 million.

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES

Jobs

Filled jobs in Australia grew by 0.8% in the June quarter 2018, following a 0.1% rise in the March quarter 2018. Filled jobs grew 2.9% through the year in seasonally adjusted terms.

The total number of jobs in Australia increased by 131,100 (or 0.9%), made up of 14,300 job vacancies and 116,800 filled jobs.

The number of main jobs grew by 112,100 (an increase of 0.9%), while secondary jobs grew by 4,700 (an increase of 0.5%) in the June quarter 2018.

Persons

The total number of employed persons increased by 0.8% to 13.2 million in the June quarter 2018.

The proportion of employed persons working more than one job was 6.7% in the September quarter 2010 and 7.0% in the June quarter 2018.

Volumes

The total number of hours actually worked decreased by 0.5% to 5.2 billion hours; while the total number of hours paid decreased 0.3% to 5.6 billion hours.

Payments

Total labour income increased by 1.0% to $243,474 million.

Total compensation of employees increased by 0.9% to $220,484 million, and labour income from self-employment decreased by 2.4% to $22,990 million.

Over the same period, total labour costs increased by $2,905 million (1.1%) to $258,715 million.

Ratios

Average income per person increased by 0.3% to $18,445 in the June quarter 2018.

Average hours worked per job decreased by 1.3% to 374 hours.

Average labour cost per hour paid remained the same at $46.
