Overall, the proportion of businesses that reported any innovation still in development as at 30 June 2010 was greater for each successive employment size range. Businesses with 200 or more persons employed were the most likely to report any innovation still in development (44%), compared to 15% of businesses with 0-4 persons employed.

New marketing methods was the most commonly reported type of innovation that was still in development as at 30 June 2010 (10%). This was followed by new goods or services and new operational processes (9% and 8% respectively) and new organisational/managerial processes (7%).

The industry with the highest proportion of innovative activity still in development was Wholesale trade (30%). Businesses within the Transport, postal and warehousing industry reported the lowest proportion of innovation still in development (8%).

The highest proportion of businesses with marketing methods still in development was in the Information media and telecommunications industry (16%). Businesses within the Mining industry recorded the highest proportion of businesses with operational processes still in development (14%) while businesses within the Financial and insurance services industry reported the highest proportion for organisational/managerial processes still in development (12%). The industry with the highest recorded proportion of goods and services still in development was Wholesale trade (19%).

The Transport, postal and warehousing industry recorded the lowest or equal lowest proportion of businesses still in the process of developing new goods or services (3%), operational processes (4%), organisational/managerial process (2%) or marketing methods (4%).
