Tasmania's population, like Australia's, continues to age. At 30 June 2003, the median age (the age at which half the population is older and half is younger) of the Tasmanian population was 38.1 years, the second highest of all the states and territories.

There were seven local government areas with median ages above 40 years: Glamorgan/Spring Bay (46.1 years), Break O'Day (44.8 years), Flinders (44.5 years), Tasman (45.0 years), King Island (41.6 years), Central Highlands (40.6 years) and Latrobe (40.4 years). Brighton local government area had the lowest median age, 30.7 years.

Note: These figures have subsequently been revised at the state level, but the updated figures are not available at the regional level.
