BALANCE ON GOODS AND SERVICES

In trend terms, the balance on goods and services was a deficit of $3,250m in August 2015, a decrease of $22m (1%) on the deficit in July 2015.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the balance on goods and services was a deficit of $3,095m in August 2015, an increase of $303m (11%) on the deficit in July 2015.

EXPORTS OF GOODS AND SERVICES

Between July and August 2015, the trend estimate of goods and services credits rose $123m to $26,148m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, goods and services credits fell $130m to $26,509m. Non-monetary gold fell $316m (19%). Rural goods rose $96m (3%) and non-rural goods rose $77m. Net exports of goods under merchanting remained steady at $36m. Services credits rose $13m.

RURAL GOODS

In trend terms, exports of rural goods fell $19m (1%) to $3,731m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, exports of rural goods rose $96m (3%) to $3,784m.

The main component contributing to the rise in seasonally adjusted estimates was other rural, up $121m (8%).

NON-RURAL GOODS

In trend terms, exports of non-rural goods rose $62m to $15,746m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, exports of non-rural goods rose $77m to $15,975m.

The main components contributing to the rise in seasonally adjusted estimates were:
  • coal, coke and briquettes, up $234m (7%)
  • other mineral fuels, up $176m (10%).

Partly offsetting these rises was metals (excl. non-monetary gold), down $208m (20%).

NET EXPORTS OF GOODS UNDER MERCHANTING

In trend terms, net exports of goods under merchanting rose $1m (3%) to $35m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, net exports of goods under merchanting remained steady at $36m.

NON-MONETARY GOLD

In trend terms, exports of non-monetary gold rose $67m (5%) to $1,329m.

In original and seasonally adjusted terms, exports of non-monetary gold fell $316m (19%) to $1,374m.

In trend terms, service credits rose $12m to $5,307m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, services credits rose $13m to $5,340m.

The main component contributing to the rise in seasonally adjusted estimates was transport, up $9m (2%), with passenger transport up $9m (5%).

In seasonally adjusted terms, tourism related service credits rose $11m to $3,454m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, total services credits contributed 20% of total goods and services exported.


IMPORTS OF GOODS AND SERVICES

Between July and August 2015, the trend estimate of goods and services debits rose $101m to $29,398m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, goods and services debits rose $173m (1%) to $29,604m. Consumption goods rose $139m (2%), intermediate and other merchandise goods rose $67m (1%) and non-monetary gold rose $26m (8%). Capital goods fell $30m (1%). Services debits fell $29m.

CONSUMPTION GOODS

In trend terms, imports of consumption goods rose $80m (1%) to $8,033m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, imports of consumption goods rose $139m (2%) to $8,084m.

The main component contributing to this rise in seasonally adjusted estimates was consumption goods n.e.s., up $121m (5%).

CAPITAL GOODS

In trend terms, imports of capital goods rose $45m (1%) to $5,342m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, imports of capital goods fell $30m (1%) to $5,632m.

The main components contributing to the fall in seasonally adjusted estimates were:
  • machinery and industrial equipment, down $299m (15%)
  • civil aircraft and confidentialised items, down $156m (17%).

Partly offsetting these falls was capital goods n.e.s., up $523m (153%).

INTERMEDIATE AND OTHER MERCHANDISE GOODS

In trend terms, imports of intermediate and other merchandise goods fell $22m to $9,615m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, imports of intermediate and other merchandise goods rose $67m (1%) to $9,504m.

The main component contributing to the rise in seasonally adjusted estimates was fuels and lubricants, up $548m (24%).

Partly offsetting this rise were:
  • processed industrial supplies n.e.s., down $366m (13%)
  • other merchandise goods, down $82m (74%).

NON-MONETARY GOLD

In trend terms, imports of non-monetary gold fell $6m (2%) to $336m.

In original and seasonally adjusted terms, imports of non-monetary gold rose $26m (8%) to $343m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, services debits fell $29m to $6,041m.

The main component contributing to the fall in seasonally adjusted estimates were:
  • maintenance and repair services n.i.e., down $14m (40%)
  • travel, down $13m (1%).

In seasonally adjusted terms, imports of tourism related services debits fell $16m (1%) to $2,923m.

In seasonally adjusted terms, total services debits contributed 20% of total goods and services imported.

International merchandise trade exports data presented in the above table are based on information reported by exporters to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). For commodities such as iron ore and coal, newly negotiated contract prices are not fully reflected in data first reported to DIBP. Final quantity and/or unit price information is updated progressively in international merchandise trade data as exporters revise the information provided to DIBP. When additional information for these commodities is available, the ABS may adjust the data to reflect actual transaction values.

Unit values in this publication are presented in Australian dollar terms. Movements in the unit values for some commodities incorporate movements in the United States dollar prices reported to DIBP and movements in the Australian dollar to United States dollar exchange rate.

On an international merchandise trade basis, in original terms (noting the footnote in the above table), between July and August 2015 the largest movements recorded for the following selected commodities were:

Iron ore lump, up $9m (1%), with quantities down 2% and unit values up 3%. Exports to:
  • China (excluding SARs and Taiwan) rose $76m (11%), with quantities up 6% and unit values up 4%
  • the Republic of Korea fell $35m (47%), with quantities down 49% and unit values up 5%
  • Taiwan fell $15m (32%), with quantities down 31% and unit values down 1%
  • Japan fell $13m (8%), with quantities down 11% and unit values up 3%.

Iron ore fines, up $188m (6%), with quantities up 7%. Exports to China (excluding SARs and Taiwan) rose $197m (8%), with quantities up 9%.

Hard coking coal, up $81m (6%), with quantities up 4% and unit values up 2%. Exports to:
  • Sweden rose $68m, following no exports in July 2015
  • India rose $66m (21%), with quantities up 15% and unit values up 5%
  • France rose $45m (273%), with quantities up 226% and unit values up 14%
  • China (excluding SARs and Taiwan) fell $76m (25%), with quantities down 28% and unit values up 5%
  • Turkey fell $55m (100%), with quantities down 100%.

Semi-soft coal, up $139m (26%), with quantities up 22% and unit values up 3%. Exports to:
  • Taiwan rose $47m (206%), with quantities up 211% and unit values down 2%
  • China (excluding SARs and Taiwan) rose $44m (45%), with quantities up 26% and unit values up 15%
  • India rose $37m (58%), with quantities up 51% and unit values up 5%.

Thermal coal, up $176m (13%), with quantities up 9% and unit values up 4%. Exports to:
  • Japan rose $82m (13%), with quantities up 10% and unit values up 3%
  • Mexico rose $34m (310%), with quantities up 305% and unit values up 1%
  • Malaysia rose $33m (124%), with quantities up 126% and unit values down 1%.
