CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

REVISIONS TO MERCHANDISE TRADE DATA OUTSIDE THE NORMAL REVISION PERIOD

Due to new information, export statistics have been revised on an international merchandise trade basis in the financial years 2011-12 and 2012-13. These financial years are outside the normal revision period for international merchandise trade data. The changes will impact on statistics in the time series spreadsheets related to goods exporters in this publication. These changes align with data published in International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia, August 2014 (cat. no. 5368.0).

IMPLICATIONS OF CHANGES TO THE SURVEY OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN SERVICES

During 2013 the Survey of International Trade in Services migrated to an ABS Business Register (ABSBR) based frame, with frame and selection frequency changing from annual to quarterly. This change in frequency, together with revisions to the survey stratification design implemented in September quarter 2013 has required the introduction of a new methodology for estimating the number of services exporters. As a result estimates of counts of services exporters for 2013-14 are not directly comparable with estimates provided in previous editions of this publication, and therefore these series (as presented in Tables 1.1 and 10.1) commence with 2013-14.

CHANGE TO TABLE 1.1

Due to the change in methodology described above counts of services exporters, and therefore counts of total goods and services exporters, are unavailable prior to 2013-14. Table 1.1 has been updated to remove the total goods and services exporters series for this publication.

CHANGES IN FORTHCOMING ISSUES

Three substantial changes will be applied to the goods component of the 2014-15 publication, which is due for release in 2016. The publication will also include reproduced 2013-14 goods data on the new basis. The changes are as follows:

1. The statistical unit for the goods component will change from an ABN basis to a Type of Activity Unit (TAU) basis. This change will bring the statistical unit in line with both the trade in services statistical unit and a number of other business surveys. In addition, the change will allow the ABS to better estimate an overlap between the number of goods and services exporters, allowing for estimation of the total number of goods and services exporters.
2. The source of business characteristics data will change from Australian Business register (ABR) to the ABS Business Register (ABSBR). This change is expected to improve the quality of ANZSIC and size classification data.
3. Table 6 presents data on the number of locations, state of origin, and the state of locations of the exporters. From the 2014-15 publication, this table will no longer be included.

Information relating to changes 1. and 2. are contained on the ABS Business Register page of the ABS website.
