UPDATE OF EXPLANATORY NOTES

The Explanatory Notes have been reviewed and updated.

IMPACTS ON SERVICES DUE TO DELAYS OF OVERSEAS ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES (OAD) DATA

A number of releases of Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0) have been delayed due to passenger card processing issues as announced by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). These delays impact on transport and travel services series for the March quarter 2015. Caution should be used when interpreting the recent services credits and services debits estimates as they are based on modelled estimates rather than actual data.

Preliminary OAD estimates for January, February and March 2015 published in the ABS publication Preliminary Estimates of Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0.30.001) have been incorporated into services estimates. These preliminary OAD estimates have been modelled based on a combination of historical OAD data and information about travellers for the relevant reference months from DIBP's Travel and Immigration Processing System. For further information refer to the Explanatory Notes of Preliminary Estimates of Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0.30.001).

Finalised OAD data for November and December 2014 released in Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0) have been incorporated in this issue. This has resulted in a difference between the sum of the three months for travel services published in the March 2015 issue of International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia (cat. no. 5368.0).

SEEKING INPUT INTO A REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTS STATISTICAL OUTPUTS

As Australia's national statistical agency, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provides a statistical service that informs discussion and decision making. It is important we ensure we are producing data that are required and in demand. In the area of Balance of Payments and International Investment Statistics, the ABS has moved over the years to increase the range and extent of detail provided in the statistics.

The ABS is reviewing the current outputs and looking at opportunities to implement strategies to reshape the future of Australia’s International Accounts Statistics. The primary focus of the review is re-allocating or shifting the existing resources to ensure International Accounts Statistics remain applicable for users now and into the future.

If you are interested in contributing to the ABS review please contact International Accounts director on 02 6252 7988 or balance.of.payments@abs.gov.au. The ABS expects to make an announcement of any decisions by September 2015.
