RESPIRATORY DISEASES (J00-J99)

Diseases of the Respiratory System (J00-J99) were the underlying cause of death for 193 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons in 2011 and accounted for 8.1% of deaths.

The most common type of respiratory disease that contributed to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths was Chronic lower respiratory diseases (J40-J47), which was the underlying cause of death for 135 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons. The age standardised death rate for Chronic lower respiratory diseases was three times higher (rate ratio of 3.0) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians compared with non-Indigenous Australians (76.3 per 100,000 and 25.7 per 100,000, respectively).
