Presents the latest estimates of total population for states, territories and Australia. Includes the most recent estimates of the population in five-year age groups: numbers (and some rates) of births, deaths, infant deaths, interstate and overseas movements.
Family Characteristics and Transitions 2006-07 (cat. no. 4442.0)
Presents information on the composition of families and households. Some of the issues covered include marital status, labour force status, and visiting arrangements for children with parents living elsewhere.

This annual publication focuses on people and social issues. Each article in the publication uses statistics to tell a story, drawing on a range of information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and other official sources to paint a picture of current conditions and trends in Australian society.
Experimental Estimates of Indigenous Australians, June 2006 (cat. no. 3238.0.55.001)
Contains final estimates of the resident Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations as at 30 June 2006 based on the 2006 Census of Population and Housing, for various geographies. Estimates are disaggregated by age (5-year age groups) and sex for state and territory, Remoteness Areas and Indigenous Regions.

Contains estimates of the resident population by age (in five-year age groups up to 85 and over) and sex for each Statistical Local Area, Statistical Subdivision and Statistical Division and state and territory of Australia as at 30 June 2007.
Mental Health and Wellbeing: Profile of Adults, Australia, 2008 (cat. no. 4326.0)
Presents an overview of the main topics covered in the 2007 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing which collected information from adults aged 18 years and over. The survey collected information about a person's functioning, chronic conditions, specific mental health issues including dementia, depression, mania, panic disorder, social phobia, substance use, suicidality and others, as well as data on medications, social networks, caregiving and a range of demographics. The publication will provide comprehensive Australian data on key mental health issues including the prevalence of mental disorders, the associated disability, and the use of services.
A Picture of the Nation: The statistician's report on the 2006 census (cat. no. 2070.0)
A Picture of the Nation will provide a comprehensive overview of the 2006 Census, summarising a large volume of Census data, as well as providing more detailed analysis and commentary on a number of current topical issues. It will demonstrate the power of census statistics in providing information on big picture trends, as well as detailed information on small areas and small population groups, while covering both social and economic aspects of Australian life.
A Picture of the Nation is aimed at all users of Census data who are interested in stories from the Census. The commentary covers a wide range of issues which can help readers gain a better understanding of Australia and its people. Among many other topics, some of the features of the report with particular relevance to ageing will include: generational view of the population, migration and mobility, living arrangements and housing.
The Report, scheduled for release in August 2008, will be available for purchase as a hard copy publication and for free download from the ABS website in a PDF document format.

Census of Population and Housing: Older Persons, Australia, 2006 (cat. no. 2048.0)
Providing an ageing focus on 2006 Census data, this publication will be a useful resource for agencies with ageing policy responsibilities, researchers and the Australian community generally. While a major focus is on the number and characteristics of older Australians, i.e. persons aged 65 years and over, it also explores the ageing process in Australia by examining other age cohorts including mature age workers and the very old as well as examining trends over time by comparing with data from previous Censuses. Topics covered include population structure, geographic distribution, mobility, indigenous status, birthplace and ancestry, language, religion, families and households, living arrangements, housing, labour force participation, hours worked, income, transport, and education. In each chapter, data are presented in tabular, graphic and textual form, mainly at a national level, with a limited number of tables and maps at a more detailed geographic level.
