GROSS VALUE OF IRRIGATED AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION (GVIAP)

  • In 2011-12, the total gross value of irrigated agricultural production (GVIAP) for Australia rose by 5% over the previous year to $13.5 billion. The three commodities with the highest GVIAP in Australia were vegetables valued at $2.6 billion, fruit (excluding grapes) valued at $2.4 billion and cotton valued at $2.2 billion.
  • In the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) region, the total GVIAP rose by 13% to $6.7 billion, and accounted for 49% of the total GVIAP for Australia. The commodities with the highest GVIAP in the MDB in 2011-12 were cotton, valued at $2.0 billion, fruit (excluding grapes), valued at $1.2 billion, and dairy production, valued at $857 million.
  • In New South Wales, cotton was the commodity with the highest GVIAP, valued at $1.2 billion and constituting 39% of total GVIAP in that state. Cotton was also the commodity with the highest GVIAP in Queensland, valued at $915 million. In Victoria and Tasmania, the highest GVIAP was recorded for dairy production, valued at $1.2 billion and $221 million respectively. In South Australia and Western Australia, the commodity with the highest GVIAP was vegetables, valued at $491 million and $304 million respectively.
