NOTES This publication presents nationally comparable statistics relating to the criminal jurisdictions of the Higher (Supreme and Intermediate), Magistrates' and Children's Courts across Australia for the period 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012. Selected time series data are also included where available. The statistics describe the characteristics of defendants, including information on the offences, case outcomes and sentences associated with those defendants.
Data cubes are available in the Downloads tab for cat. no. 4513.0 on the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) website. Data on defendants who identified as being Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in the Higher Courts for New South Wales and the Magistrates' and Children's Courts in South Australia are presented for the first time in this issue. As a result, information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander defendants is now available for each court level in New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory and for defendants in the Magistrates' and Children's Courts in South Australia. For further information on the identification of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander defendants see Explanatory Notes paragraphs 49–52.
Twelve new tables have been included in this issue. These tables present data on sex and age by principal offence, Indigenous Status time series (by age and by sex) and Indigenous Status by principal sentence and age.
In previous issues of this publication, organisations had been included in the total counts of tables relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander defendants. Tables relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander defendants now exclude organisations from totals. The statistics in this publication are sourced from the national Criminal Courts collection conducted by ABS and have been compiled according to national standards in order to maximise consistency between the states and territories. The Explanatory Notes, Appendices and Glossary provide detailed information on the data sources, counting rules, terminology, classifications and other technical aspects associated with these statistics. Discrepancies may occur between sums of component items and totals across tables and within some summary tables due to rounding and randomisation. More information about ABS activities in the field of crime and justice statistics is available from the Crime and Justice theme page on the ABS website. Details of other ABS publications relating to crime and justice statistics can be found in paragraph 108 of the Explanatory Notes.
