Expanded Indigenous Statistics in Crime

The Recorded Crime - Offenders (cat. no. 4519.0) publication expands the availability of Indigenous statistics in the Crime and Justice collection. Data on Indigenous offenders by principal offence, number of times proceeded against by police, and demographic details such as age and sex were presented for Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Northern Territory jurisdictions for 2008-09. Data for other jurisdictions are not yet of sufficient quality to include in the report and the ABS continues to work with these jurisdictions to improve the quality of their Indigenous data. Indigenous Statistics for Queensland were available for the first time in Recorded Crime - Offenders, 2008-09 (cat. no. 4519.0) and were re-introduced in Recorded Crime, Victims 2009 (4510.0).

Revised Australian Standard Offence Classification (ASOC) Implementation

The ASOC provides a basis for the standardised collection, analysis and dissemination of offence data within crime and justice statistics. Following a substantial review of the classification, including extensive consultation across the crime and justice sector, the second edition of the Australian Standard Offence Classification (ASOC), 2008, (Second Edition) (cat. no. 1234.0) was released in August 2008.

The revised ASOC (ASOC08) was adopted to reflect changes that have occurred in criminal legislation since the first version was released in 1997 (ASOC97), as well as satisfying emerging user requirements for offence data. ASOC08 has been implemented in crime and justice collections from 2009, with the following publications being the first of each collection to provide data using the revised classification:

Work in Progress

Sentence Quantum

A pilot test is underway to collect data on the sentence quantum outcomes for finalised defendants proven guilty in the Higher Courts in Australia. This data will complement the sentence type information already published as part of the annual criminal courts collection.

Prisoners with Federal Offences

A project is underway to collect data about the number and characteristics of prisoners with a federal offence for selected states and territories.
