The tables attached contain estimates from the National Health Survey(NHS) conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics from February to November 2001. The tables are based on selected tables published in National Health Survey; Summary of Results, Australia, 2001 (cat. no. 4364.0) released on 25 October 2002, but whereas published tables were compiled for Australia, these tables are compiled for broad groupings from the Australian Standard Geographical Classification Remotess classification. A list of the tables attached is provided below. For information about this classification see Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) 2001 (cat. no. 1216.0).

The ASGC Remoteness classification has 5 categories. In compiling the attached tables several categories have been combined so that all tables use the following 3 category classification:

  • Major cities of Australia (ARIA index values 0 - 0.2),
  • Inner regional Australia (ARIA index values greater than 0.2 to less than and equal to 2.4,
  • Outer regional and remote Australia (comprises the remoteness categories of Outer regional, Remote and Very remote - ARIA index values greater than 2.4)

Some points to note about these tables:
  • Although the tables are based on published national tables, the level of detail shown in most tables has been reduced (classifications have been reduced or item cross-classifications removed) to ensure that the tables do not pose a risk to the identification of respondents and that estimates are sufficiently reliable for general use. In addition, individual cells in some tables have been suppressed to minimise the risk of respondent identification.
  • Each worksheet contains two versions of each table - one which contains the survey estimates, and the second which shows the relative standard error (RSE) of each of the estimates shown. In order to ascertain the RSE for an estimate simply locate the correspoding cell in the RSE version of the table. The RSEs shown in these tables have been complied using the replicate methodology - for further information see the 2001 National Health Survey: Users' Guide which will be available on this site from early 2003, or contact the ABS as shown below. Generally estimates with an RSE of less than 25% are considered sufficiently reliable for most purposes; estimates with an RSE of between 25% and 50% should be used with caution, while those with an RSE greater than 50% are considered to unreliable for general use.
  • For explanation of terms or concepts used in these tables, see the Explanatory Notes or Glossary contained in National Health Survey; Summary of Results, Australia 2001 (cat. no. 4364.0).
