KEY FINDINGS


Preschool Enrolments

In 2015, there were 325,273 children aged 4 or 5 years old enrolled in a preschool program in Australia. Of these, 15,337 were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.


There were 7,769 children aged 4 or 5 years enrolled in a preschool program who lived in Remote/Very Remote areas of Australia. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children accounted for 2,956 of these children.


Socio-Economic Status

Children in preschool programs have been allocated to five socio-economic status categories based on the characteristics of the community in which they live (see Glossary, Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas). Of the children enrolled in a preschool program in Australia, 21.7% resided in the least disadvantaged areas, and 17.7% resided in the most disadvantaged areas.


Hours of enrolment and attendance in 2015

The majority of children (294,172 children) were enrolled in a preschool program for an estimated 600 hours or more during 2015. The number of children who attended for an estimated 600 hours or more during the year was 237,775.

There were 14,012 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 4 or 5 years who were enrolled for an estimated 600 hours or more in 2015, whilst 9,696 attended for as many hours.
