CULTURAL FUNDING

KEY FINDINGS

Results from the 2011-12 Cultural Funding by Government survey were released in August. A few key findings are provided here:

  • In 2011-12 the estimate of total expenditure funded by the three tiers of government was $6,974.3m; an increase of 5% from 2010-11 ($6,640.6m).
  • State and territory governments accounted for the largest proportion of this total (47% or $3,277.0m), followed by the Australian Government (34% or $2,355.0m) and local governments (19% or $1,342.3m).
  • The estimate of expenditure by the three tiers of government was $309.80 per person in 2011-12. Of this value, $104.60 was provided by the Australian Government, state and territory governments' and local governments provided $145.60 per person and $59.60 per person respectively.

In early October we will be sending out forms for the 2012-13 Cultural Funding by Government survey. This will be the second survey despatch this year. Some of you will remember the Cultural Funding by Government, Australia, 2011-12 (cat. no. 4183.0) survey conducted earlier in 2013. The reason for having two surveys this year is to enable us to move the 2013-14 survey closer to the end of the reference period thus enabling us to release the results earlier than for previous surveys. This will make the results more timely and useful. We expect the 2012-13 results to be released in April 2014, about four months earlier in the year than for past surveys. The 2013-14 survey will be sent out in October 2014 so things will be back to a more normal arrangement next year.
