Sports Compendium

A new edition of the Sports Compendium, officially known as Sports and Physical Recreation: a Statistical Overview, Australia, 2008 (Edition 2) (cat. no. 4156.0), was released in October 2008. The Compendium provides a statistical overview of sports and physical recreation in Australia. Topics covered include time spent on sport and recreation, output of the sports and physical recreation sector, employment in sports and physical recreation, government outlays on recreation, international trade in sports and physical recreation goods, attendances at sporting events, and participation in sports and physical recreation activities.


This edition includes new data on the following topics:
  • how people spend their free time
  • employment in sports and physical recreation
  • earnings, hours and selected characteristics of employees
  • paid and unpaid involvement in sport
  • rates of participation in voluntary work
  • engineering construction of sports and physical recreation facilities
  • access to sporting facilities by indigenous communities
  • the value of manufacturing of selected sports and physical recreation products
  • exports of selected sports and physical recreation goods
  • supply and demand for sports and physical recreation products.
