PRINCIPAL OFFENCE

The predominant principal offence that offenders were proceeded against in 2007-08 were public order offences and acts intended to cause injury (both 23% of all offenders), followed by theft (21%).

While both male and female offenders had the same most prevalent principal offences, there were notable contrasts in the proportions for each sex against the various offence types. Male offenders were more commonly proceeded against than females for a public order offence as their principal offence (26% of male offenders compared to 14% of female offenders), whereas 40% of female offenders were proceeded against for theft as their principal offence compared to 15% of male offenders.

Age was a factor when considering the type of principal offence that someone was proceeded against by police. Based on the median age of offenders by each principal offence type, offenders were younger for principal offences relating to theft (median age 17 years) and unlawful entry with intent (median age 18 years). Offenders were older for sexual assault (median age 33 years) and offences against justice (median age 31 years).
