PERSPECTIVES ON MIGRANTS, 2012

The seventh edition in the series Perspectives on Migrants (cat. no. 3416.0) was released in September, 2012. This series provides informed commentary on issues and debates relating to migrants, ethnicity and migration programs that are common place within the Australian political and media landscape.

The seventh edition contains a descriptive article that investigates the social and community connections of two migrant groups:

This article uses the ABS 2010 General Social Survey (GSS) to analyse several characteristics of social and community connectedness of two migrant arrival groups - those arriving before 2006 and those arriving between 2006 and 2010. It explores the types of social activities migrants engaged in and with whom, frequency of engagements, types of social organisations participated in as well as their general levels of life satisfaction and trust. The article aims to analyse ‘life outcomes‘ variables collected in the 2010 GSS to similar variables that formed part of the Settlement Outcomes of Newly Arrived migrants survey (SoNA) that was independently commissioned by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Expected for release in early 2013 will be a descriptive article about Migrant Families of Australia. Data used in the article comes from the Family Characteristics Survey, Australia, 2009-10. The article will focus its discussion on the type and composition of families throughout Australia and provide a comparison of the migrant family, broadly defined in terms of country of birth and year of arrival into Australia.
