Please note: to ensure that data are not doubled please check the state or territory variable is used in your extraction. If the variable is not used an individual will be counted twice, once within the state/territory and once within Australia.

Overseas migration estimates are final for years up to and including 2008–09 and preliminary for 2009, 2009–10 and 2010. See paragraphs 9–10 of the Explanatory Notes for further information.

This time series is based on the improved methodology (12/16 month rule) from 2004 onwards. It has been used in calculating Australia's official estimated resident population (ERP) since September quarter 2006.

NOM arrivals are all overseas arrivals that contribute to net overseas migration. They are the number of incoming international travellers who stay in Australia for 12 months or more and are added to the population.

NOM departures are all overseas departures that contribute to net overseas migration. They are the number of outgoing international travellers (Australian residents and long term visitors to Australia) who stay away from Australia for 12 months or more and are subtracted from the population.

For further information see paragraphs 28 to 44 of the Explanatory Notes of this publication and the Technical Note: '12/16 month rule' Methodology for Calculating Net Overseas Migration from September quarter 2006 and onwards released with the Migration Australia, 2008-09 (cat.no. 3412.0) publication.
