SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during October 2018 (782,600 movements) increased 0.3% when compared with September 2018 (780,100 movements). In October 2018, short-term visitor arrivals were 4.1% higher than in October 2017.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during October 2018. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for October 2017 and October 2018 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for India (13.1%), followed by Japan (11.6%) and Singapore (8.4%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for South Korea (-13.6%) the United States of America (-1.9%) and the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man (-0.5).

SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS

In trend terms, short-term resident returns to Australia during October 2018 (933,600 movements) increased 0.2% when compared with September 2018 (931,900 movements). In October 2018, short-term resident returns were 5.6% higher than in October 2017.

The following table presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in October 2018. When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for October 2017 and October 2018 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for Indonesia and Japan (both 12.1%), followed by Italy (10.7%) and China (8.9%). The highest percentage decrease was recorded for Thailand (-2.6%).
