SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during December 2017 (751,400 movements) decreased 0.1% when compared with November 2017 (752,000 movements). Currently, short-term visitor arrivals are 5.8% higher than in December 2016.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during December 2017. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for December 2016 and December 2017 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for India (18.5%), followed by Hong Kong (17.4%), and South Korea (12.4%). The highest percentage decrease was recorded for Malaysia (-4.1%).

SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS

In trend terms, short-term resident returns to Australia during December 2017 (885,600 movements) increased 0.1% when compared with November 2017 (884,700 movements). Currently, short-term resident returns are 3.2% higher than in December 2016.

The following table presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in December 2017. When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for December 2016 and December 2017 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for Japan (14.2%), followed by India (13.7%), and Thailand (11.7%).The highest percentage decreases were recorded for Indonesia (-9.4%), Fiji (-4.6%) and the United States (-3.8%).
