INFANT DEATHS


In 2016, there were 970 infant deaths (deaths of children less than one year of age) registered in Australia (543 males and 427 females). This was a 2.1% decrease compared with the number registered in 2015 (991). Over the past 10 years, the number of infant deaths has decreased overall (with some fluctuations). The number of infant deaths was 1,262 in 2006, and decreased to 970 in 2016. INFANT MORTALITY RATES

In 2016, the infant mortality rate (IMR) was the lowest on record at 3.1 infant deaths per 1,000 live births. Ten years ago, the IMR was 4.7 deaths per 1,000 live births (see graph 1.5).
