INFANT DEATHS


In 2015, there were 991 infant deaths (deaths of children less than one year of age) registered in Australia (542 males and 449 females). This was a 2.1% decrease compared with the number registered in 2014 (1,012). Over the past 10 years the number of infant deaths has generally decreased, with some fluctuations, from 1,302 infant deaths in 2005 to 991 in 2015. INFANT MORTALITY RATES

In 2015, the infant mortality rate (IMR) was the lowest on record at 3.2 infant deaths per 1,000 live births. Ten years ago in 2005, the IMR was 4.9 deaths per 1,000 live births (see graph 1.5).
