Victoria recorded the largest increase (9,324 or 12.7%) in the number of births registered in 2016. Some of the increases were due to a catch-up in processing lags. New South Wales recorded a decrease of 3,996 births (4.0%). The ABS is currently working with the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages to investigate the decline in birth registrations, noting that processing issues can impact on counts.

The Australian Capital Territory recorded the highest median ages of mothers and fathers (31.9 years and 33.8 years respectively), followed by Victoria (31.7 years for mothers and 33.7 years for fathers). The Northern Territory had the youngest mothers (29.6 years), followed by Tasmania (30.0 years). This order was reversed for the father's median age, with 32.1 years for Tasmania and 32.4 years for the Northern Territory. In 2016, Tasmania recorded the highest TFR (1.95 babies per woman) closely followed by the Northern Territory (1.92 babies per woman), while the Australian Capital Territory recorded the lowest rate (1.55 babies per woman).
