ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION
This product contains estimates of the resident population by age (in five-year age groups up to 85 and over) and sex for each Statistical Local Area, Statistical Subdivision and Statistical Division and state and territory of Australia as at 30 June 2006, according to the 2006 edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC). Estimates for Local Government and other areas using Statistical Local Areas as a base can be derived from these estimates. The estimates in this publication are preliminary for 2006, based on results of the 2006 Census of Population and Housing, and final for 2001 and 1996. For further information on the compilation and accuracy of estimates, refer to the Explanatory Notes. The final 2006 Census-based SLA and LGA estimates for June 2002 through to June 2006 are intended to be released in August 2008, in Population Growth and Distribution, Australia (cat. no. 2035.0).
More information about the estimates of the total populations in each LGA and SLA in Australia is in Regional Population Growth, Australia, 1996 to 2006 (cat. no. 3218.0).
CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
From this issue, commentary and data for Australia and all states and territories are stored in the one product. Previously, commentary and data were stored in nine separate products (cat. no. 3235.n.55.001, where n was a number from 0 to 8).
Previously, only Supertable datacubes were provided in the Details tab of each product. This issue includes one Supertable datacube containing 2006 Census-based 30 June 2006 estimates by sex and five-year age groups for every SLA in Australia; Excel spreadsheets for Australia and each state and territory containing those estimates; and an Excel spreadsheet containing summary statistics such as median ages and sex ratios for each SLA in Australia.
In commentary based on statistics in this publication, it is recommended that the relevant statistics be rounded. Small area population estimates use 2006 Census data and mathematical modelling in their compilation and are subject to error. While unrounded figures are provided in tables, accuracy to the last digit is not claimed and should not be assumed. No reliance should be placed on statistics with small values.
