CORRECTION

The 'Key Points' and 'Main Features' of the December 2010 issue reflected the ERP increase for the year ended 31 December 2010 (325,500) as the lowest recorded since the year ended 31 December 2006 (329,600 persons), however it was the lowest recorded since the year ended 30 September 2006 (319,100 persons). It was also stated that the population growth rate of 1.5% was the lowest since the year ended 30 September 2006, however it was the lowest since the year ended 31 December 2005.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Recent consultation with stakeholders has resulted in the ABS changing key terms from this release onwards. The term 'Indigenous population' has been replaced with 'Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population' and 'Experimental' has been removed from certain table titles.

ESTIMATED RESIDENT POPULATION STATUS

ERP data for 30 September 2001 to 30 June 2006 are final and based on the 2006 and earlier Censuses of Population and Housing. Data from September quarter 2006 to December quarter 2009 are revised for all components. NOM data from March quarter 2010 onwards is preliminary. Natural Increase data is revised for the March and June quarters of 2010 and provisional thereafter - see paragraph 7 of the Explanatory Notes.

Due to the collection and estimation methods applied to produce preliminary statistics, users should exercise caution when analysing and interpreting the most recent annual and quarterly estimates for all components of the ERP, particularly when making time series comparisons.

Data released with this publication now includes population estimates by age and sex, and other associated data which was previously published in Population by Age and Sex, Australian States and Territories (cat. no. 3201.0), which ceased with the release of the June quarter 2010 data (released 21 December 2010).
