ABS seeks public comment on 2001 census products and services

The Australian Bureau of Statistics today invited public comment on proposals for products and services from the next Census of Population and Housing to be held in August 2001.

The information paper 2001 Census of Population and Housing, ABS Views on Census Output Strategy describes a strategy for providing products and services from the nation's largest statistical collection to business, community and other users.

Proposals include using the Internet to disseminate census information. They also include options for the ABS' census flagship product CDATA, a CD-ROM product providing an extensive range of census information.

ABS clients and other users of census data are invited to comment on any aspect of the output strategy, using a questionnaire included with the information paper. The questionnaire can also be completed on-line until 15 November 1999.

Responses to the questionnaire will be used in preparing more detailed plans for 2001 Census products and services and these will be presented for user and public comment in mid 2000.

The Census is the largest statistical operation undertaken by the ABS and generates an enormous amount of valuable information which helps planners, policy makers and researchers.

Products and services from the 2001 Census will be designed to assist and encourage informed decision making, research and discussion by government, business and the community.

Copies of the Information Paper and questionnaire may be obtained by calling 1800 813 939 or the Information Paper and questionnaire are also available on this site.

The information paper, 2001 Census of Population and Housing, ABS Views on Census Output Strategy (cat. no. 2009.0) is also available from ABS bookshops in all capital cities.
