Preface

The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of the key themes emerging from the 2016 Census consultation process.

Public consultation on the content for the 2016 Census of Population and Housing opened on 6 November 2012 and closed on 31 May 2013. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) received 915 submissions from government agencies/organisations (Federal, State, Territory and Local), non-government organisations, individuals and other groups. Included in this figure were 45 submissions received as part of the 2011 Census consultation process. Due to financial constraints, the 2011 Census was undertaken with minimal change and the submissions received then were held by the ABS and included in the 2016 Census consultation process.

The ABS would like to thank those who have taken the time and effort to make submissions. Consultation is a critical element of content development and enables the ABS to incorporate appropriate topics in the 2016 Census to meet the needs of Australia's constantly changing and diverse society.
