Litchfield ahead of the field

For the first time since 2006-07, Litchfield has overtaken Palmerston as the fastest growing local government area in the Northern Territory, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

In 2010, Litchfield’s population increased by 3% or 567 people, compared to 2.7% for Palmerston.

Darwin’s population increased by 2.2% in 2010 to 127,532, making it the second fastest-growing capital city in Australia, only marginally behind Perth.

The above population data are just a feature of many economic, social and environmental statistical online profiles updated today. This includes 16 local government areas and 65 statistical local areas in the Northern Territory as well as over 2000 regions across Australia.

The ABS's National Regional Profile makes it easy for local communities to compare their regions with neighbouring districts, other regions in the Northern Territory and elsewhere in Australia.

There are data available on hundreds of items, including average income levels, unemployment rates, number of motor vehicles, estimated resident population, and much more.

For example, did you know:

  • The Statistical Local Area of Alyangula, a mining community, recorded the highest average total income in the NT ($69,213) in 2008-09; and
  • Darwin had the highest number of registered passenger vehicles per 1,000 persons in 2010 (523) followed by Alice Springs (445) and Litchfield (419).

Regional information is available over a five year period up to 2010, so local communities can track changes over time in the characteristics of their areas.

The Google Maps interface makes finding regions a cinch. To get started, just click on the ‘National Regional Profile’ link on the ABS website, www.abs.gov.au.
