Preliminary estimates show the total production of grapes for the 2006 harvest decreased by 3% from last year's record harvest to stand at 2.0 million tonnes. The largest producing state, South Australia, recorded a slight decrease in production (down 1% to 855,000 tonnes). Victorian production decreased by 5% to 524,000 tonnes and New South Wales production decreased by 1% to 504,000 tonnes.

The total area of vines reported decreased slightly to stand at 165,000 hectares in the 2006 season. This compares with the 2005 record estimate of 167,000 hectares. Decreases were reported in all the major growing states except Victoria.
