MAIN CONDITION IN FETUS/INFANT

Disorders related to length of gestation and fetal growth (P05-P08) accounted for 31% (773) of total 2008 perinatal deaths, compared to 34% (867) in 2007. Conversely, Congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities (Q00-Q99) accounted for 16% (394) in 2008, compared to 17% (421) in 2007. Respiratory and cardiovascular disorders specific to the perinatal period (P20-P29) accounted for 6.5% (163) of perinatal deaths in 2008, compared to 8.8% (222) in 2007; with 2008 data the lowest point in the ten year period for this cause.

In 2008, over a third (907) of all perinatal deaths were assigned a non-specific cause of death in the fetus/infant (Fetal death of unspecified cause (P95), Other conditions originating in the perinatal period (P96) and Other ill-defined causes of mortality (R99)). Most of these were fetal deaths, representing 863 of the 907 perinatal deaths assigned a non-specific cause of death. While 52% of all fetal deaths registered in 2008 reported no specific cause, the corresponding figure for neonatal deaths was 5.2%.

- nil or rounded to zero (including null cells)
(a) Perinatal deaths are all fetal deaths (at least 20 weeks gestation or at least 400 grams birth weight) plus all neonatal deaths. See Glossary for further information.
(b) Males deaths include those perinatal deaths of sex indeterminate.
(c) Data cells with small values have been randomly assigned to protect the confidentiality of individuals. As a result, some totals will not equal the sum of their components. It is important to note that cells with a zero value have not been affected by confidentialisation.
(d) Causes of death data for 2007 have been revised and are subject to further revisions. See Technical Note 2: Revisions Process for further information.
(e) 2008 data have been subject to a process improvement which has increased the quality of these data. See Technical Note 1: Perinatal Deaths Process Improvement for further information.
(f) Causes of death data for 2008 are preliminary and subject to a revisions process. See Technical Note 2: Revisions Process for further information.
