PRICE INDEXES OF MATERIALS USED IN BUILDING

  • In the June quarter 2009, the increase in the price of materials for housing construction in Western Australia was 0.4%, lower than for the previous quarter (1.2%).
  • Through the year to June 2009, the price index for these materials rose by just over 7%. This was over 1 percentage point more than the national rise. Perth had the second largest annual price increase after Adelaide (almost 10%).

  • The price of steel products continued to drive the overall price increase in building materials in the year to June 2009. Despite falling 2.7% from the March quarter 2009, the steel products component of the index was 34% higher than in the June quarter 2008. This increase is closely aligned to the national increase of 28% over the same period.
