21. 'Main source of income' may be derived or self-reported. This section outlines the output options for the variable 'Main source of income' for both situations.


MAIN SOURCE OF INCOME IS SELF-REPORTED

22. The self-reported main source of income question response and output categories are provided below. Standard footnotes are also provided for the output categories.

23. The output categories are equal to the question response options for responses 1 to 7, where supported by the estimates. Response category 8 'Nil or negative' is coded to 'Not applicable' for main source of income and is output in 'Totals' as indicated below.

    * Includes income from sources other than those listed separately e.g. child support, workers' compensation, scholarships.

MAIN SOURCE OF INCOME IS DERIVED

24. 'Main source of income' can be output at any level of the classification supported by reported data. It can only be output for higher level units where detailed information on all sources of income are available for each person within that statistical unit.

25. Units whose 'Total income' sums to zero or a negative value are coded as 'Not applicable' for 'Main source of income' and is output in 'Totals' as indicated below.

    * Includes income other than wages or salaries, own unincorporated business income and government pensions and allowances. It includes income received as a result of ownership of financial assets (interest, dividends), and of non-financial assets (rent, royalties) and other current receipts from sources such as superannuation, child support, workers' compensation and scholarships.
    **Includes units with nil or negative income
