This release provides the 2012 Tourism Region maps and correspondence file. These are based on the 2011 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS).

The product provides maps and a correspondence file for Tourism Regions for each state and the Northern Territory. Tourism Regions are defined in consultation with the relevant national and state/territory tourism organisations and their boundaries are reviewed annually. Each Tourism Region is constructed from allocations of whole Statistical Areas Level 2s (SA2s). SA2s are a small spatial unit of the ASGS. The correspondence file provides name and code details of Tourism Regions and those SA2s from which they have been constructed.

Any changes to Tourism Regions are applied to products issued from the March quarter reference period in the following year. For example, the 2012 maps and correspondence will apply to the March, June, September and December quarter 2013 of the Survey of Tourist Accommodation, Australia (cat. no. 8635.0) releases.

The ASGS was introduced as the geographic framework for the Survey of Tourist Accommodation from March quarter 2012. It replaced the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC). Further information regarding the implementation are provided in an information paper: Future Changes to Tourist Accommodation, Australia, June 2012 (cat. no. 8365.0.55.003)

For further information on the ASGS please refer to the ABS website at https://www.abs.gov.au/geography.
