BREAK IN SERIES

The Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA) is a census of all in-scope accommodation establishments with 15 or more rooms. STA frame maintenance procedures have resulted in the identification and subsequent addition of 279 new establishments to the STA beginning with the September quarter 2014.

By including the additional 279 establishments, this has changed the level of the STA estimates from the September quarter 2014. Therefore, data up to and including June quarter 2014 is not strictly comparable with data from September quarter 2014, constituting a break in the series. It is recommended users read the Technical note included in this release for interpreting the movements in the data as shown in this publication.

Where appropriate the effect of the break is taken into account in the analysis below.

KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATES (CHANGE FROM CORRESPONDING QUARTER OF PREVIOUS YEAR)
  • Takings from accommodation, adjusted for the break in series, rose by 3.5% in June 2015 to $2,522.7 million. This followed increases of 4.2% in March 2015, 3.1% in December 2014 and 1.4% in September 2014.
  • Room occupancy rates rose by 0.8 percentage points to 65.0% in June 2015. This followed increases of 0.9 percentage points in March 2015, 0.7 percentage points in December 2014 and 0.2 percentage points in September 2014.

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES (CHANGE FROM CORRESPONDING QUARTER OF PREVIOUS YEAR)
  • Takings from accommodation, adjusted for the break in series, rose by 2.8% to $2,509.9 million in June 2015. This followed increases of 5.5% in March 2015, 3.5% in December 2014 and 1.4% in September 2014.
  • Room occupancy rates rose by 0.9 percentage points to 65.1% in June 2015. This followed increases of 0.8 percentage points in March 2015, 0.7 percentage points in December 2014 and 0.5 percentage points in September 2014.
