WELCOME

Welcome again to the ABS tourism statistics newsletter.This edition will include information on recent tourism industry related issues and updates, describe current ABS work related to tourism statistics, and inform users about recent and forthcoming ABS publications.

Included in this issue is a brief definition of tourism, based on international OECD standards for tourism concepts.

The Australian National Accounts - Tourism Satellite Account 2006-07 (ABS cat no. 5249.0) was published on April 17 this year. The ABS is required to annually revise and update figures in the Tourism Satellite Account. As a result of user feedback following the release of the 2005-06 Australian National Accounts: Tourism Satellite Account (cat. no. 5249.0), several of the sources and methods used to compile the TSA were reviewed and improved, and the 2006-07 publication reflects those changes. Details of the changes can be found in the summary page of the ABS website version of the publication. The 2006-07 release includes a data cube containing all data in spreadsheet format.

Over the remainder of this year and early next year, we will be conducting a full review of our industry statistics program. We will be seeking input from many of you regarding the importance of the various statistical outputs to your areas of interest, and we look forward to hearing your opinions.

We hope this newsletter will provide more insight into the work of the ABS and provide a way for clients and stakeholders to connect with work of the ABS. As such, we would appreciate any feedback you would like to provide regarding the usefulness of the information presented.
