This publication presents information from the 2012-13 Business Characteristics Survey (BCS). The BCS is conducted annually and collects detailed information relating to: use of information technology (IT); innovation; and a broad range of other non-financial characteristics.

The data presented in this publication includes key indicators of: internet access; web presence; social media presence; the use of broadband; internet commerce (i.e. the placing and receiving of orders via the internet); and innovation.

There are two components to this release: web based information and data cubes. The data cubes contain detailed data that underpins the tables, graphs and commentary included in the web based information.

More detailed and final estimates from the BCS will be released in Innovation in Australian Business (cat. no. 8158.0) on 21 August 2014 and Selected Characteristics of Australian Business (cat. no. 8167.0) on 18 September 2014.

Information about data quality provided in the Quality Declaration and Explanatory Notes must be taken into consideration when interpreting the statistics in this release.
