The quantity of wheat; barley; oats; triticale; oilseeds; and 'sorghum, other feed grains and pulses' held in storage facilities operated by major bulk handling companies and grain traders as measured at the last day of January 2007 are contained in this publication. The 'sorghum, other feed grains and pulses' category consists of a broad range of grain types including cereal rye, maize, vetch, soybean, lupins, field peas, chick peas, faba beans and broad beans for which no grain type split is available.
This collection commenced in December 2002 following concerns regarding the lack of available information on the quantity of grain held in storage facilities across Australia. It was undertaken on a monthly and quarterly basis until December 2004. The series was revived in October 2006 in response to concerns regarding feed grain availability during this current period of drought. It is planned to conduct the collection at monthly intervals until the end of May 2007 with the possibility of quarterly collections thereafter, subject to user funding.
SCOPE AND COVERAGE
The collection does not attempt to measure the total amount of grain held in storage facilities in Australia. Regional or small storage operators are not represented in these statistics. Statistics contained in this publication represent the major bulk grain handling companies.
The quantity of grain by type, grade, and location (at State level) of storage was collected from the major operators of grain storage facilities in Australia. To avoid the possibility of duplication in reporting, only quantities actually held in storage facilities operated by the selected business, regardless of grain ownership, were collected from each business. This included storage facilities rented from other businesses where the selected business was responsible for the operation of the facility.
The quantity of grain shown does not include grain stored on farms across Australia i.e. businesses which are classified to subdivision 01 "Agriculture" of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC).
