Welcome to the Autumn 2012 edition of Ag Mag. From up here in the top paddock the view is pretty amazing. We have completed the data harvest for the 2011 Agricultural Census and are preparing our goods for market; well, we are preparing the data for publication to the ABS website. There is more in the mag about the products which will be coming out in late June where we will be presenting data at the Australia and State/Territory level from the Agricultural Census, including for the first time final data on the area, production, value and water all at the same time.

We have also been busy preparing for the annual collections we will be undertaking this year. The biennial Vineyards Survey will be hitting the field later this week. Additionally this year we will be conducting the Agricultural Resource Management Survey which will collect data on agricultural production and agricultural land and water management practices. This too is a biennial collection, alternating with the more complete commodity collections of the Agricultural Census (last year) and the Agricultural Commodity Survey (next year). Of course, we are continuing with the monthly Wheat collections, the Livestock Slaughtering collection and the quarterly Poultry and Game Birds Slaughtered, and Wool Receivals collections.

In fact, if you are looking for ABS agriculture data, can I suggest that you have a look at the Topics@a glance - Agriculture web page? It is a great launching point for finding out what is new in our patch as well as the ABS data releases related to agriculture - a quick way of finding what you might be looking for.

By the next time we report from the top paddock, the days will be short and we will all be looking forward to Spring. Enjoy this edition of Ag Mag and the preparations for the cooler months, at least down here in the south of the country! Until next edition ..
