Preliminary results from the 2006-07 Agricultural Survey are scheduled for release in December 2007. These much awaited data will quantify the effects of the current drought on agricultural production.
The Agricultural Survey is conducted in 4 out of every 5 years (i.e. between census years). It is a commodity based survey of about 35,000 farm businesses, selected from the Australian Business Register, who have an Estimated Value of Agricultural Operations (EVAO), or equivalent, of $5,000 or more per year.
Data are available at the National, State and, for the 2006-07 year onwards, Natural Resource Management (NRM) regions. Information will also be available for key commodities at Statistical Division (SD). These data are used by primary producers, industry organisations and suppliers, and other agricultural service and support industries for planning and decision making. The Federal and State Governments make extensive use of agricultural statistics for planning, budgets, advisory services and for policies related to marketing agricultural commodities.
The Agricultural Survey is also the major source of commodity data input into the calculation of Value of Agricultural Commodities Produced (VACP). VACP is a major output from the survey which is in turn used as an input to the Australian National Accounts.
For research/background information only a sample copy of the 2006-07 NSW Agricultural Survey form is attached here.
Please note: A PDF version of the form should not be printed off and used as a replacement for a lost 'hardcopy' form. Farmers who may have misplaced their original form are asked to ring 1800 647 011 and request a new hardcopy be mailed out.
