JUNE KEY POINTS


QUARTERLY ESTIMATES

• In June quarter 2016, there were 60 disputes, 20 fewer than in March quarter 2016.
• The number of employees involved in industrial disputes in June quarter 2016 was 20,500, a decrease of 3,400 employees from March quarter 2016.
• There were 24,500 working days lost due to industrial disputation in June quarter 2016, a decrease of 3,400 working days lost from March quarter 2016.
• The Construction industry (16,200) had the highest number of working days lost by industry, accounting for 66% of total working days lost.
• Queensland (12,900) had the highest number of working days lost of any state or territory in June quarter 2016. Queensland accounted for 52% of total working days lost, the same proportion as in March quarter 2016.

YEAR ENDED ESTIMATES

• During the year ended June 2016, there were 264 disputes, 62 more than in the year ended June 2015.
• Over the same period, there were 100,700 working days lost, 31% more than in the year ended June 2015 (76,800).

UPDATE ON THE REVIEW OF INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES STATISTICS

During 2014-15, the ABS conducted a review of Industrial Disputes statistics with the outcomes released on 11 June 2015. Key outcomes of the review were to extend the collection to include all work stoppages (currently work stoppages of less than ten working days lost are excluded) and to include work bans (currently work bans are excluded). Following an assessment of the feasibility of implementing the review outcomes, it has been decided to not proceed with the implementation as there are a number of constraints in providers' ability to supply the necessary data. The ABS will continue to release Industrial Disputes statistics on the existing quarterly basis with no changes to scope, coverage, content and output.
