EXPLANATORY NOTES

INTRODUCTION

1 These data cubes present data on sports volunteers and total volunteers for people aged 18 years and over in Australia, compiled from the voluntary work module included in the 2006 General Social Survey (GSS). The GSS collected information about personal and household characteristics for people aged 18 years and over resident in private dwellings, throughout non-remote areas of Australia, from March to July 2006.

2 The first data cube listed presents data for Australia. The second data cube presents results for the individual states and territories in similar table layouts as provided for Australia level data. Note that some tables have not been reproduced for the states and territories, while in other tables there has been some collapsing of rows or columns of data or suppression of cells due to the need to maintain data quality and confidentiality.

3 Further Explanatory Notes on the voluntary work module of the 2006 General Social Survey (GSS) can be found in Voluntary Work, Australia, 2006 (cat. no. 4441.0). These Explanatory Notes contain information on the scope of the survey, sample design, data collection, weighting and reliability of estimates. The publication also contains a Technical Note that provides information on data reliability.

EFFECTS OF ROUNDING

4 Figures have been rounded and discrepancies may occur between totals and the sums of the component items.

DATA INTERPRETATION

5 In some tables, the sum of volunteering involvements or types of voluntary work undertaken exceeds the number of volunteers because individual volunteers may work for more than one organisation or undertake more than one task in each given organisation type.
