JANUARY KEY POINTS

SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS TO AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals during January 2019 (781,400 movements) increased 0.1% when compared with December 2018 (780,700 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.1% in both November 2018 and December 2018. The current trend estimate for arrivals is 3.2% higher than in January 2018.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During January 2019, short-term visitor arrivals (782,600 movements) remained steady at 0.0% when compared with December 2018 (782,900 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 0.1% for November 2018 and a monthly increase of 0.7% for December 2018.
  • Original estimates: There were 731,100 short-term visitor arrivals to Australia in January 2019.


SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term resident returns during January 2019 (945,700 movements) increased 0.3% when compared with December 2018 (943,000 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.4% for both November 2018 and December 2018. The current trend estimate for returns is 6.1% higher than in January 2018.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During January 2019, short-term resident returns (947,000 movements) increased 0.2% when compared with December 2018 (944,800 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 0.5% for November 2018 and a monthly increase of 0.8% for December 2018.
  • Original estimates: There were 1,392,800 short-term resident returns to Australia in January 2019.
