DESCRIPTION


The Survey of Employer Views on Vocational Education and Training (VET) provides information on the views of employers on VET in Australia. For employers with recently graduated employees, their views have been sought on the quality and relevance of VET and for all employers, their characteristics, general views on VET as well as information on their organisation's training practices has been collected.


Scope

The survey covers all employers and data are available for the following employer groups:

    • employers with recent VET graduate employees (at least one employee who completed a VET course of at least 200 hours duration within the two years prior to the survey)
    • employers with VET graduate employees (who completed their training more than 2 years ago)
    • employers without VET graduate employees (no current employees who have graduated from a VET course of at least 200 hours duration).

GEOGRAPHY

Information is available for Australia and all States and Territories.


METHOD OF COLLECTION

For all existing surveys, information has been collected from a sample of employers using the consultant's Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) system. A commercial sampling frame based on listings in the Yellow Pages has been used.


TIMING OF COLLECTION

Reference Period

July to August.

Frequency of Collection

Biennial.

Historical Data

The survey has been conducted in 2001, 1999, 1997 and 1995. It was previously titled the Employer Satisfaction Survey. In 1999, employers with no employees with VET qualifications were included. The 2001 survey included information on employers of non-recent VET graduates and had additional information about employers' views on aspects of course delivery and graduates' skills.

Due to the development of new Key Performance Measures as part of the National Strategy for the VET System 2004-2010, the next survey will be modified to take a wider focus than previously. The survey is expected to be run in January 2005, and will be titled the Survey of Employer Use and Views of the Vocational Education and Training System.
