DESCRIPTION

This collection provides selected financial statistics on the operation of the university components of Australian higher education institutions. The data comprises of operating statements and a dissection of operating expenses according to the activity and type of expenditure.

Scope

The Higher Education Finance Data Collection only includes information from higher education institutions in Australia as determined under the Higher Education Funding Act 1988. This includes:

  • institutions that receive block operating grant funding for teaching and research activities; and
  • other public higher education institutions which receive some level of operating grant funding.

Excluded from the Higher Education Finance Data Collection are:
  • the Australian Film, Television and Radio School;
  • the Australian Defence Force Academy;
  • the National Institute of Dramatic Art, and the Open Learning Agency of Australia Pty Ltd; and
  • private institutions which are not required to report statistical data to DEST and are therefore outside the scope of the collection. This includes Bond University.

Publication

Data Service

Publications are available on the internet. Arrangements can be made to provide copies of tables in Excel spreadsheet format. Access to more detailed data from the collection may be arranged.


Release Schedule

The publication is released two years after the reference year.

Dissection of operating expenses according to:
  • Activity
  • Type of expenditure


GEOGRAPHY

Information is available for Australia and all states and territories.


METHOD OF COLLECTION

In most instances data are compiled from the Annual Financial Statements prepared by higher education institutions in accordance with guidelines set by Commonwealth and state/territory financial reporting agreements.


TIMING OF COLLECTION

Reference Period

Compiled from financial reports as at 31 December each year.

Frequency of Collection

Annual.

Historical Data

Publications are available from 1992 to present. The 1992 and 1993 publications also contain details about expenditure on research.
