The proportion of marriages between Australian born people has been gradually decreasing since 1990, with the proportion of marriages between two people born in Australia decreasing from 61.9% in 1990 to 56.6% of all marriages in 2010.

Conversely, the proportion of marriages between two people born in the same overseas country has increased over the same period, from 8.2% in 1990 to 12.0% in 2010. Likewise, for those marriages where the parties were born in different countries, the proportion of marriages has increased to 31.3% of all marriages from the 29.9% in 1990.

In 2010, the median age at marriage of males and females born in Australia was 31.4 years and 29.0 years respectively. Among the countries analysed, the youngest median age was for females born in Lebanon (25.6 years) and males born in India (26.5 years). Females and males with the oldest median age were born in Italy, where the median age of females was 38.2 years and the median age of males was 45.4 years.
